A Journey Back in Time: The English Mild Ale

From 1850-1950, English Mild was the beer that defined an era and was the staple of every Beer House across England. Mild’s popularity surely served as a demonstration of British brewers skills but reasons for its popularity extended beyond its flavor; it was a common link amongst members of  the community and an integral part of the culture.

Despite its variations over the years due to taxation, wartime cutbacks, and changes in consumer taste, the English Mild remained at the heart of England's beer culture.

XX Strength: A Symbol of Heritage

But what exactly is an English Mild Ale? At its core, it's a beer that's all about balance and subtlety. Mild doesn't mean weak. It refers to the gentle harmony of malts and hops, creating a brew that's easy to drink yet full of flavor.

When we say “XX”, we're referring to historic beer terms. The “X” marking on a cask (barrel) of Mild served as a way to identify the relative strength of a beer. The system is simple, a beer marked with one “X” was the lowest in alcohol and “XXXX” was the marking for the highest.

The Magic of Nitro

In our quest to bring back the experience of enjoying an English Mild Ale at the Beer House we turned to nitrogenation a.k.a Nitro. A beer that is nitrogenated, as opposed to carbonated, serves as a better mimic for the soft, creamy texture of cask-conditioned ales. At the time of Milds popular run cask conditioning was the norm, offering a smoother, less carbonated drinking experience. Our use of Nitro is a nod to this tradition, enhancing the beer's overall mouthfeel.
